UCAS Media Newsletter

July 2011

Dear Colleague

It's just under a month until the Clearing and Confirmation period begins in earnest; are you ready?

Clearing unplaced email - A message direct to the right audience

We can email unplaced applicants on your institution's behalf to alert them of spaces on courses. We can target unplaced applicants by location, subject applied for or country of domicile. This means you can get the message you want to the right audience. Average open rates are 33% for the official route to unplaced potential.

We start emailing unplaced students on 22 August this year, and these emails are also proving popular, with the first weeks' slots fully booked. However, we still have campaign slots available from Tuesday 30 August. By October 2010 there were 164,771 unplaced students who opted in to receiving unplaced emails, of which 34,158 were international students. Contact me now to find out how you can book your slot.

How big is Clearing?

This year, we expect well over 200,000 applicants to become unplaced in Clearing; 13,000 of whom request to be released into Clearing. It's imperative for both student and HEI, that the right applicant is matched with the right course. Although we have seen an unprecedented rise in demand for our advertising services in 2011 and are fully booked out on the website, UCAS Media still has some opportunities for you to connect with students over this period.

We expect Clearing 2011 to be busier than ever, with UCAS being the key point of reference and contact for students. Last year we saw:

  • 1,505,125 Clearing vacancy searches
  • 1,226,084 Track log ins
  • At Course Search's peak there were 112 course searches per second
  • UCAS was the 6th highest trending topic on Twitter

Clearing web opportunities - UCAS Connect; social media hub

Clearing advertising is proving very popular this year and all advertising slots have been fully allocated on www.ucas.com. New this year, there is advertising space on our social media hub - UCAS Connect. There is one overarching leader board available during Clearing.

UCAS Connect

UCAS Connect is an interactive site that pulls together UCAS social media presence and students can visit for top tips, FAQ's and videos. This year, we are also working in conjunction with The Student Room to provide advice in a social media setting; there is link through to UCAS Connect from TSR website. There will be live Twitter feeds and advice available during Clearing - a really exciting new opportunity for 2011.

Exam Results Helpline

This year the exam results helpline will be delivered by Skills Development Scotland from 4-17 August for students in Scotland receiving their Higher and Standard results and delivered by UCAS on behalf of the Department for Education from 18 - 27 August for students in the rest of the UK receiving their A level and GCSE results.

The Exam Results Helpline number is 0808 100 8000. Calls are free from landlines and select mobile networks.
